New Zealand and Australia celebrate Anzac Day from home


Australians and New Zealanders celebrated Anzac Day from outside their homes when memorial ceremonies and marches were affected by the pandemic.

The countries' annual memorial day of war is traditionally the biggest trans-Tasman event of the year, but the current crisis meant that large gatherings were not possible.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern kicked off the process with an Instagram post showing a flower wreath outside her Wellington residence, as well as her and her fiance Clarke Gayford alongside her father Ross Ardern.

Mrs. Ardern wrote: “In my street, one of our neighbors played the service through a small speaker while we were all separated but together… A different Anzac Day, but still really special. Let's not forget it. "

His Australian counterpart Scott Morrison kept things short, simply tweeting a photograph of himself with his wife Jenny at the Australian War Memorial (AWM) in Canberra with the caption "Let's not forget it."Mr. Morrison previously released the memorial address on the AWM, with the monument's Twitter account encouraging people to upload photos of themselves outside their homes for the traditional sunrise service.
